Instructions
Pumpkin Base:
Using Orange yarn and the 9.0 mm hook, start with a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 2 (does not count as st), work 10 dc in magic ring. Join with sl st to first dc. (10 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2, work 2 dc in each st around. Join. (20 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, *1 fpdc, 2 dc in next st* repeat around. Join. (30 sts)
Round 4: Ch 2, *1 fpdc, 1 dc, 2 dc in next st* repeat around. Join. (40 sts)
Round 5: Ch 2, *1 fpdc, 2 dc, 2 dc in next st* repeat around. Join. (50 sts)
Continue increasing in this manner, keeping the fpdc aligned to create the pumpkin ridges, until the base measures approximately 16 inches (40 cm) in diameter.
Pumpkin Body & Opening:
Work 6 rounds even without increasing, alternating fpdc and dc to maintain the vertical ribbed pattern. This builds up the bottom walls.
To create the opening, you will now work in rows back and forth instead of joined rounds:
Row 1-12: Ch 2, turn. Work in pattern (alternating fpdc/bpdc depending on side) across, leaving 12 stitches unworked for the front circular opening. Turn.
Row 13: Ch 12 (to bridge the opening gap), join to the other side, and resume working in continuous rounds to close the top of the opening.
Pumpkin Top (Decreasing):
Round 1: Continue the ribbed pattern around, working across the 12 chain stitches with standard stitches to match the pattern.
Round 2-8: Begin gradually decreasing the dc sections between the fpdc ridges to taper the pumpkin inward, finishing with a small opening at the top. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Brown Stem:
Using Brown yarn and the 5.0 mm hook:
Round 1: Magic ring, 6 sc inside. (6 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Round 3-15: Sc in each st around. Stuff firmly with fiberfill and sew to the top center of the pumpkin.
Green Leaf & Vine:
Using Green yarn and the 5.0 mm hook for the leaf: Ch 12. Slip stitch in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next, hdc in next, dc in next 5 chs, hdc in next, sc in next, 3 sc in last chain to turn. Work down opposite side of chain in reverse order. Sew to the base of the stem.
For the curly vine: In Orange, ch 25. Work 3 sc in each ch across. It will naturally curl. Sew next to the leaf. Finish by inserting a cozy round cushion inside the pumpkin pet cave!
