Instructions
Floral Motif (Make many):
Ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc into the ring. Join with sl st to first sc. (8 sc)
Round 2: *Ch 4, sl st into the 3rd ch from hook (this makes a picot), ch 1, sl st into the next sc of Round 1.* Repeat from * to * 8 times around. Join with sl st to the first sl st of the round. You will have 8 picot-edged petals/loops.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for weaving in.
Necklace Chain:
You will create a series of Floral Motifs, joining them as you go. For joining, you will replace a picot’s final sl st with a sl st into a picot of the previous motif.
Make your first Floral Motif completely.
For the second Motif: Work up to the 7th picot petal of Round 2 as normal. For the 8th petal, work as follows: Ch 4, sl st into the 3rd ch from hook (first part of picot). Now, instead of completing the picot, sl st into one of the picots of the previous (first) motif. Then ch 1, and complete the petal by sl st into the next sc of Round 1 on your current (second) motif. This joins the two motifs at a single point.
Continue making and joining motifs in this manner until your chain reaches the desired length for the necklace (e.g., 25-30 motifs, or adjust to desired length).
Once the chain is complete, securely fasten off and weave in ends. You can attach a small jump ring and clasp to the ends, or create a loop on one end and a buttonhole on the other using a few chain stitches for closure.
Cross Pendant:
The cross is constructed by joining several Floral Motifs. We will use the 8-petal Floral Motif from above. Each joint described below involves replacing a picot’s final sl st with a sl st into the corresponding picot of the motif being joined to. When joining, typically align two adjacent picots of the current motif to two adjacent picots of the motif being joined to, creating a secure connection.
Central Motif (M1): Make one Floral Motif completely.
Top Arm (M2): Make a second Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the top section of M1.
Bottom Arm (M3): Make a third Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the bottom section of M1, directly opposite where M2 was joined.
Left Arm (M4): Make a fourth Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the left section of M1.
Right Arm (M5): Make a fifth Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the right section of M1.
Bottom Extension 1 (M6): Make a sixth Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the bottom of M3.
Bottom Extension 2 (M7): Make a seventh Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the bottom of M6.
Top Extension (M8 – for Chain attachment): Make an eighth Floral Motif. Join two adjacent picots on its Round 2 to two adjacent picots on the top of M2. This motif will be where the necklace chain attaches.
Securely fasten off all ends and weave them in.
Assembly:
Find the center point of your completed necklace chain.
Using a tapestry needle and a short length of crochet thread, securely sew one of the picots from the central top section of the Cross Pendant (specifically, one of the top picots of M8) to a picot on the center of your necklace chain. Ensure it hangs evenly.
Weave in all remaining loose ends.
(Optional) For a stiffer finish, you may lightly starch or apply fabric stiffener to the finished necklace and pin it to shape while drying.
