Instructions
Gauge: Not critical for this project, but aiming for a dense fabric for the bag body.
Notes: The bag is worked in separate panels then joined. The decorative layers are worked onto the front panel base.
BAG BODY (MAKE 2 – 1 for front, 1 for back)
Using Yarn A (Cream/Beige):
Row 1: Ch 31. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (30 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (30 sc)
Rows 3-15: Rep Row 2. (You should now have a rectangle approximately 30 stitches wide and 15 rows tall).
Shaping the Semicircle (continue on one side for each panel):
Row 16: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 28 sts, leaving last 2 sts unworked. (28 sc)
Row 17: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 26 sts, leaving last 2 sts unworked. (26 sc)
Continue decreasing by 2 sts each row until you have approximately 4-6 stitches remaining. Fo.
Repeat for the second bag body panel.
DECORATIVE FLAP (Work onto ONE of the Bag Body panels – this will be your FRONT panel)
Using Yarn B (Sage Green):
Row 1 (Green Base): Join Yarn B with a sc to the straight top edge of one Bag Body panel (the side that was Row 1 of the sc rectangle, before shaping). Sc evenly across this edge. Make sure your stitch count is a multiple of 6 + 1. (Approx. 30 sc)
Row 2 (Green Shells): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st. *Sk 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st (shell made), sk 2 sts, sc in next st*. Rep from * across.
Row 3 (Green Shells): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc. *Ch 2, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in ch-1 space of next shell, ch 2, sc in next sc*. Rep from * across. Fo.
Using Yarn C (Light Lavender):
Row 1 (Lavender Base): Join Yarn C with a sl st to the first sc of the last Green Shell row (Row 3). Ch 1, sc in each sc and ch-2 space across. (This row should have the same number of sc as the Green Base Row 1, approx. 30 sc).
Row 2 (Lavender Shells): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st. *Sk 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st (shell made), sk 2 sts, sc in next st*. Rep from * across.
Row 3 (Lavender Shells): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc. *Ch 2, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in ch-1 space of next shell, ch 2, sc in next sc*. Rep from * across.
Row 4 (Flap Edging): Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc and ch-2 space across. (Approx. 30 sc). Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
ASSEMBLY
Place the Front Panel (with decorative flap) on top of the plain Back Panel, wrong sides together.
Using Yarn A, sc around the curved edges of the bag, joining the two panels. Work 3 sc into each corner to maintain shape. Sl st to join. Fo.
Weave in all ends securely.
BELT (Braided Cord)
Cut 6 long strands of yarn: 2 of Yarn A, 2 of Yarn B, and 2 of Yarn C (each approx. 80-100 inches long, depending on desired belt length).
Gather all 6 strands together, make a knot at one end, leaving a tail.
Separate the strands into three groups of two (one strand of each color in each group, or mix as desired).
Braid the three groups together until the desired belt length is achieved. Make a knot at the other end.
Thread the belt through the top edge stitches of the bag, approximately 2-3 stitches from the top opening on each side, allowing the bag to sit centrally. Secure the belt to the bag by tying small knots or stitching discreetly.
TASSELS (Make 2)
Wrap a mix of Yarn A, B, and C around a piece of cardboard (approx. 4-5 inches tall) about 20-30 times.
Carefully slide the yarn off the cardboard.
Cut an 8-inch piece of yarn, thread it through the top loop of the wrapped yarn, and tie it tightly to secure the tassel head.
Cut another 8-inch piece of yarn and wrap it tightly around the tassel head about 1 inch below the top tie, forming a small ‘neck’. Knot securely.
Trim the bottom loops of the tassel to create even fringe.
Attach one tassel to each end of the braided belt.
